I visited Wasabi Tei earlier in Feb this year after reading a lot about it from other people's blogs, and yes, I was totally blown away by the experience. Tiny nondescript hole-in-the-wall with no ambience - check. Hour-long wait - check. Grumpy non-service - check. Strange policy of extra surcharge for additional orders - check. But i thought it was all worth it. Because the appetiser was so yummy i wanted to slurp the plate. Because of the creamy, luscious slabs of sashimi... and because for the first time in my life I tasted raw scallop - and totally fell in love with its melt-in-your-mouth sweetness...
So I dragged my friends H and D there a couple of months ago, insisting that they try the best japanese joint in Singapore... D was not happy at all when we joined a long queue at 8pm and i told her that we may have to wait a while cos they just started serving the first round of people...
By 9pm, we had hardly moved from our original queue spot because *nobody* had come out, and we were becoming increasingly antsy cos the restaurant closes at 9:30pm... and considering the owners' take-it-or-leave-it attitude, we thought they might just close shop despite the long queue of hungry people outside...
People started to leave around 9ish so we started believing again... by about 915, we were finally allowed to enter the sacred fish shop. By then D looked like she lost all her money to nigerian scams and even the normally happy-go-lucky H was becoming grumpy... i offered to buy them dinner but was turned down... uh oh.
To lighten the mood, I started taking photos... which made D even more autistic...
The food *finally* came and I was happy (even though they ran out of scallops)...
H and D eventually didnt finish their food because the serving was huge and I ordered too much sashimi... when I asked them how the food was, H said she might bring her husband next time but D said she wouldnt go again because it simply wasnt worth the wait.
I remembered feeling quite guilty and decided that i shouldnt bring non-foodie friends to food meccas again, cos the journey can be too ardous for non-believers... and somehow, i think i lost a bit of faith too and started to question the logic of queuing for food...
BUT things took an amazing turn last week, when D sms-ed me in the middle of the night to say that she was craving for Wasabi Tei sashimi and we should go again.
So yes, i can now happily declare to all my friends - Wasabi Tei is the best Japanese joint in Singapore! Your feet may say no, but your stomach will always prevail! Good food always triumphs! Wheeee!
